A fever is any rise in body temperature that takes it over normal (37°C or 98.4°F). There are a number of causes for fever, some more serious that other. The great majority are caused by infection or overheating.
Most fevers can be controlled at home with paracetamol and sponging with lukewarm water, but if the temperature rises above 40°C (102°F) ring your doctor. Persistent high fever can cause brain damage. Fevers in small children can cause febrile convulsions and should be prevented wherever possible.
