Bites are potentially dangerous for two reasons: one because the teeth of animals carry germs which can be thrust deep into the arteries and tissues by the force of a bite, causing infection; and two because they can be deep enough to damage tissue and occasionally to break bones. Some animals carry a disease called rabies which is serious. This condition is not found in the UK at present, but can be contracted while abroad, or from an animal smuggled in from a country abroad. If you suspect rabies, seek emergency medical attention.
