This is a rare, severe, and life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs in people who have an extreme sensitivity to a particular substance. This reaction most common occurs after an insect sting, or as a reaction to an injected drug (such as penicillin). Less commonly, the reaction occurs after a particular food is taken by mouth.
