Convulsions, which are often called fits, are contractions of the muscles as a result of a brain dysfunction. They are often a symptom of epilepsy, but there are other causes, including: * head injuries * ingestion of poison (including alcohol in excess) * inadequate oxygen in the brain * high temperature (in babies and children; these are known as 'febrile' convulsions)
No matter what the cause, the treatment is the same. Some convulsions are accompanied by unconsciousness.
